License or acquire the Hybrid Power Pack patent family
This page is written for technology-licensing, IP and advanced-engineering teams. It answers the questions a licensing evaluation asks first — what exactly is claimed, how to map a design to it, how long it runs, who holds title, what has been tested — and sets out the terms on which the family is available.
Available for: non-exclusive field-of-use licence · exclusive licence in a field or territory · acquisition of the patent family.

1. What the family protects
The Hybrid Power Pack is a battery–capacitor energy-storage architecture: one pack in which an electrochemical store and a capacitor bank share a single input/output port, each with its own switched path, under a controller that draws power from either store or both at once. The patent family is PCT/IB2015/056108, priority India 2626/MUM/2015, 10 July 2015.
The independent claims of US 10,523,019 B2 (claims 1 and 20) recite a specific arrangement, not the general idea of pairing a battery with a capacitor. That arrangement is what a licence covers, so it is set out element by element below.
2. Claim 1, element by element
| Element | What claim 1 recites | What to look for in a design |
|---|---|---|
| 1[a] | A first storage component generating a first DC output voltage and current | A cell string or battery (claim 2: a plurality of cells) |
| 1[b] | A battery management system coupled to the first storage component via a first unidirectional switch, providing its charging path | Charge reaches the battery only through the BMS and a one-way device (diode, ideal-diode MOSFET, SCR or equivalent) |
| 1[c] | An in/out port connected to the battery management system | A shared pack terminal used both to charge and to supply the load |
| 1[d] | A second unidirectional switch coupling the port with the first storage component, providing its discharging path | A separate one-way discharge path from the battery to the shared terminal |
| 1[e] | A second storage component coupled to the port via a bidirectional switch, providing both its charging and discharging path | A capacitor bank (claim 3) switched onto the same terminal through a two-way switch |
| 1[f] | A controller cooperating with the BMS, the bidirectional switch and the port to supply a load with sustained DC power from the first store, the second store, or both simultaneously | Source selection between battery, capacitor and both in parallel |
Claim 20 recites the same arrangement with the first store as a plurality of cells, the second as a capacitor bank, and adds a cell-balancing circuit and a capacitor-balancing circuit.
This table restates the claim language so that a design can be compared with it. Whether a particular product falls within a claim is a legal question for the parties’ patent counsel, and nothing on this page is an opinion on any third party’s product.
3. The dependent claims
| Claims | What they add |
|---|---|
| 5, 6, 10, 20 | Cell balancing and capacitor balancing |
| 8, 19 | State-of-charge disconnect: a transistor isolates both stores when each reaches its determined end-of-charge value (deep-discharge protection) |
| 9 | Construction of the bidirectional switch: comparator, Zener regulator, switching element, capacitor monitor and control unit |
| 4, 7, 18 | BMS, controller and balancing circuits integrated on an application-specific integrated circuit |
| 11–17 | Additional charging inputs: AC mains, step-up DC (solar, fuel cell), coil-wound core, RF and fan-generator inputs |
A claim-by-claim engineering analysis of all twenty US claims is published open access: The Hybrid Power Pack as a platform (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.22970638).
4. Applications
The architecture earns most where a load draws short, high-current peaks from a store sized for energy. The claimed arrangement does two things in every application below: the capacitor bank, on its two-way switch, takes the fast pulses in both directions at the shared port, and the cells take charge only through the battery management system on their own one-way path, so a sharp charging pulse reaches the capacitor first.
| Application | Why it fits | Evidence on record |
|---|---|---|
| Engine starting and start–stop | A few hundred amps for under a second, many times a day | CIRT endurance test on the cranking configuration; derived battery-heat reduction 96.7–98.7 % for the cranking pulse |
| Hybrid cars and 48 V mild hybrids | Engine restarts plus regenerative-braking pulses on a small battery | Same cranking physics for restarts; published drive-cycle modelling |
| Electric vehicles: three-wheelers, buses, cars | Acceleration and regenerative-braking peaks | Published modelling: WLTC phases 53–89 % (ideal buffer); 30.6 kg bank, 26 % lower battery heat on WLTC |
| Solar, hybrid inverters and storage | Cloud and load transients in the fast band | Published modelling: 9.2 % lower battery peak power with 1.1 t per MWp |
| UPS, telecom and generator starting | The capacitor covers the seconds, the battery the minutes | Same cranking physics for generator starts; published modelling |
Engine starting and start–stop
Cars, trucks, tractors and buses. The crank is the clearest case: a peak several times the average, lasting under a second. With the capacitor carrying it, the derived reduction in battery Joule heat during the crank is 96.7–98.7 % across three cranking profiles, and the published sizing gives cell masses from 1.44 kg for 12 V car cranking banks. This is the application tested at CIRT. Suited to: makers of starting batteries and ultracapacitor engine-start modules, and truck and tractor OEMs.
Hybrid cars and 48 V mild hybrids
A mild-hybrid battery sees two kinds of peak: the restart after every stop and the braking pulse before it. In the claimed arrangement the restart is drawn from the capacitor, the braking pulse lands on the capacitor at the shared port, and the cells recharge from it through the battery management system at a rate they accept. The claims are voltage-agnostic, so the same arrangement applies to 12 V, 48 V and high-voltage packs. Suited to: 48 V system and battery suppliers, and OEMs with start–stop or mild-hybrid platforms.
Electric vehicles: three-wheelers, buses and cars
City duty is a string of accelerations and braking events. Modelled on the WLTC Class 3b drive cycle, an ideal capacitor buffer lowers battery Joule heat by 53–89 % depending on the phase. For a real bank, the published sizing study finds the best heat reduction per kilogram with a 5–10 s split: 30.6 kg of cells lowers battery heat by 26 % on WLTC, and 61.6 kg by 54 % on the harder US06 cycle. Stop-start fleets — three-wheelers, city buses, delivery vans — gain most. Suited to: EV OEMs, battery-pack integrators and swap-battery operators.
Solar, hybrid inverters and storage
A solar battery sees fast swings when cloud passes and when loads switch. With the capacitor taking the fast band (a 20 s split), the published model gives a 9.2 % lower battery peak power for 1.1 t of cells per MWp; the case is strongest in compact hybrid inverters and off-grid systems, where load steps are large relative to the battery. Suited to: hybrid-inverter and home-storage makers, and solar-plus-storage integrators.
UPS, telecom and generator starting
At a power cut the capacitor carries the first seconds and the battery takes over for the minutes that follow; at a generator start the capacitor supplies the crank. Both draw on the same physics as engine starting. Suited to: UPS and telecom-power makers, and genset OEMs.
Figures marked as derived or modelled come from the published papers and are predictions, to be confirmed by measurement in each application. The underlying relationship is Joule’s law: battery heat follows the square of current, so the reduction is 1 − 1/FF² for a duty with form factor FF — explained in peak versus rms current.
5. Test record, stated exactly
| Body | Report | What was evaluated |
|---|---|---|
| Central Institute of Road Transport, Pune | B34000, 20 Feb 2020 | Model HPP35A, cranking-battery life cycle: 10,000 cranking pulse cycles at 60 °C |
| DRDO R&DE (Engineers), Pune | 02 06 23 ESG/ETF, 21 Jun 2023 | 450 A delivered for about 2 minutes after a 16 h soak at +70 °C |
Both are single-configuration endurance and environmental evaluations. A side-by-side comparison with a battery-only control on a defined duty cycle is the next stage, with sample builds being arranged with a contract manufacturer; a licensee can specify the duty cycle that matters to its product.
